Dr. Hightower worked with several couples that acted out various common and unharmonious (dysfunctional) couple scenarios. Dr. Hightower addressed one woman's demeanor, helping her to soften her vocal tone and facial expressions, thereby de-escalating and regulating the argument, and allowing her to define and ask for what it is she is needing. Now her partner will not feel attacked or criticized and can stay in connection with her allowing a "soft dialogue" to unfold, as opposed to her partner becoming defensive, belligerent or withdrawing. Dr. Tess also explored controversial issues that have surfaced between men and women since women have successfully entered the heretofore male dominated workplace and corporate structure. These dilemmas include, who pays for dinner? who has more income? what are the woman's expectations around paying and her value? Are we wedded to traditional roles (our parents) or can we go Dutch without the man feeling emasculated?
